What Multivitamin should I get for a male smoker with high stress?

Multivitamins for a male smoker with high stressQ:  Which Multi vitamin would be best for a male smoker who has a highly stressful job?

A:  I’m glad you wrote to us before purchasing a Mulitvitamin for your husband who is a smoker!  I do recommend that he take a multi without beta carotene.  Many multi’s add this nutrient to the mix. However, research in past years noted a strong correlation with smokers who took supplements which contain high levels of beta carotene and increased development of lung cancer / tumors.

Therefore, the recommendation was made for smokers to avoid supplements with beta carotene due to this concerning observation.  The researchers initially didn’t know exactly why beta carotene supplements may somehow be involved in increasing risk of lung cancer, because it acts as an antioxidant in the body of non-smokers, and this is a good thing.  However, they think in smokers it may somehow act as a pro-oxidant in the lung cell DNA which would damage these cells.  This is why smokers are at increased risk with beta carotene supplements.  Here is one research abstract on this subject on PubMed:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18429004 – Beta-carotene in multivitamins and the possible risk of lung cancer among smokers versus former smokers: a meta-analysis and evaluation of national brands. – when you click on the link, you’ll see other published research on this topic on the side of the page. Therefore, a multivitamin, I’d recommend for him is this:
  • Liquid Multi Vite Min by Genestra – this is ideal for men because it does not have iron.  This has no beta-carotene, and is a nice 1 TBSP /day formula, so it is easy to take.

For high stress he may want to also try:

  • Stress Arrest by DFH – one to three capsules per day, this can help provide a sensation of feeling calm during stressful times.  However, one should not drink alcohol when using this product, and a health care practitioner should be consulted if on anxiety or depression medications due to possible contra-indications.
Hope he will decide to quite smoking sometime soon!  Keep encouraging him to try to quit or get medical help to help him if he can’t do it on his own.  It is important for his overall health.
