With the potential threat of food borne illnesses such as E.coli and campylobacter, consumers are taking a closer look at the dates stamped on their food products and produce. “Best by,” “use by,” and “sell by” dates on food packaging can be confusing—how reliable are they anyway?
According to the USDA and at the time of this writing, there is no uniform or universally accepted system used for food dating in the United States. Although dating of some foods is required by more than 20 states, there are areas of the country where much of the food supply has some type of open date and other areas where almost no food is dated.
