Probiotics and babies with FPIES

Babies with FPIES and Probiotics Q.  I have a 7 month baby who has FPIES and I would like to know if you could recommend a hyperallergenic probiotic, fos free?

A.  I know babies with FPIES can be extremely sensitive/allergic to many proteins.  It is difficult to find anything they can tolerate and each of these babies are individual.

We do have several probiotics for infants under 12 months:

  • HLC Neonate by Pharmax – has human strains of probiotics + a little bit of lactose, but no FOS.  The lactose is from dairy, and the casein proteins have been removed, so if there is any left at all it is barely detectable on lab tests, so babies with some sensitivities to casein usually tolerate this probiotic well.  If your baby is extremely sensitive to casein, then it may not be that she will tolerate this well.  If you don’t know, you can try it in a very small dab at first to see, then gradually increase it over time.  We’ve carried this probiotic for over 10 years, and have had good success with it.

This is the other one we have by a very good company:

Ther-Biotic Infant by Klaire Labs – this is fairly new to us, the strains are cultured from dairy, I believe, but the dairy proteins have been removed in the final product.  This does not contain lactose or FOS.

Both companies do 3rd party lab testing for purity and potency. I know babies with FPIES can be extremely sensitive/allergic to many proteins.  It is difficult to find anything they can tolerate and each of these babies are individual.
