Other dietary factors that seem to damage fertility include excessive amounts of animal protein and glycemia, as well as a deficit in iron, antioxidants, vitamin B12, and folic acid levels.

Fertility awareness may be a better option than fertility tests, especially if the couple is still young and has just begun trying. Fertility awareness includes tracking the menstrual cycle and charting the woman’s basal body temperature in order to find out when she is most likely to ovulate. One of the most common reasons for the difficulty encountered while conceiving is simply that the couple misses the woman’s fertile window when trying for a baby.

Other natural ways of solving the infertility problem would be to follow a proper, well-balanced diet, as well as to avoid drinking too much alcohol. Women are advised to stay away from alcoholic beverages completely from the time of ovulation until the onset of menstruation; the safest time to have a drink is during menstruation itself. Instead of refined carbohydrates, whole grains are a better and healthier alternative, especially for women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Sufficient intake of fruits and vegetables is another way of enhancing fertility; aside from vitamins and minerals, they also contain micronutrients that get rid of free radicals. Iron is another essential mineral for pregnancy and can be found in red and lean meats, as well as in many multivitamins.

Fish is also an essential part of the diet, as the high levels of omega-3 fatty acids it contains can aid in boosting reproduction. It is important to note that the omega-3 in fish is different from that in food like walnuts and flaxseed. To get the most out of these fatty acids, it is best to eat sardines, tuna, salmon, and herring a few times every week. Fish oil supplements also work well as a substitute for actual fish.

Listeriosis, the infection caused by the harmful bacteria listeria, has been known to cause miscarriages early on in the pregnancy, possibly before the woman is even aware that she has conceived. To decrease the risk of contracting infection when eating soft cheese, ready-to-eat meat, and unpasteurized dairy, they should be heated until steaming hot and stored at temperatures below 40o. Food like sushi, pate, meat spreads, and refrigerated smoked seafood should be avoided completely.

While protein is important in maintaining good health, consuming too much beef, chicken, and pork can be unhealthy for reproduction. Instead, choosing alternatives like peas, soybeans, beans, tofu, and nuts can work better in aiding fertility.

Other key vitamins and minerals should also be covered in the diet, and the best way to ensure that this happens is to take supplementary multivitamins. This goes for men, as well, who should make sure to take zinc and selenium continuously at least three months before planning to try for a baby, as these minerals aid in the development of healthy sperm, which takes about three months to form.
