Is Commercial Dairy Inflammatory?
Q: I have heard commercial dairy is inflammatory….is that true for fermented dairy as well, like Kefir, yogurt, etc. and raw milk with its enzymes still intact.
A: Jonny did address this, and yes, pasteurized dairy does have more of an inflammatory effect in the body than raw dairy which still has enzymes intact. If you can’t get raw dairy products from a reputable supplier, then buying hormone / antibiotic free dairy from grass-fed cows is the next best. But best to consume in limited quantities and not excessively because even this form, dairy products are pasteurized (unless labeled as raw).
Pasteurization changes the structure of the dairy proteins and enzymes are denatured. If you want to learn more on this topic, the Weston A Price Foundation has much info on this area. A good book to read is called “The Untold Story of Milk” by Ron Schmid, ND. His book is a look into the history of milk products in the US and the effects it has had on American’s health as it went from being raw to pasteurized. It is an interesting read.
