Can you give me nutritional recommendations methods to retain bone mass?
Q. Can you give me nutritional recommendations methods to retain bone mass?
A. Please see our detailed Osteoporosis recommendations on our website page here. A couple things you can do nutritionally are to increase your intake of green vegetables and nuts. These are both rich in minerals, and the veggies are alkaline which is very important for allowing your bones to absorb minerals from the food you eat. Also, omega 3 fatty acids are very important in bone matrix formation, and can be found in fish, organic eggs high in DHA, flaxseeds, and walnuts.
Exercise is critical. You should work out on weights 2-3x per week as building muscle strengthens your bones.
Vitamin D from sunshine (or capsule) is of utmost importance, since without vitamin D, your bones cannot absorb Any calcium. Most of our country is deficient in Vitamin D. See guidelines on how to increase your Vitamin D levels in the “Tips from Nutritionist” tab.
