Betaine HCL Uses and Benefits
Betaine HCL (betaine hydrochloride) is made from beets and is used to increase acid in the stomach to aid with digestion. Some people have problems producing enough gastric juices for digestion. This condition is called achlorhydria, or hypochlorhydria. Below is Wikipedia’s definition of this disease:
“. . .hypochlorhydria refers to states where the production of gastric acid in the stomach is absent or low, respectively. It is associated with various other medical problems. . .”
When the production of gastric acid is low, bacteria that would have otherwise been killed can multiply faster. This can cause imbalance in the stomach and can result in digestive problems. Betaine HCL can help in this case.
Help for Ulcers?
The theory is that partially digested food, particularly proteins, may be bad for your gut and may cause problems, including ulcers; however, there are no lab tests or scientific studies to confirm this.
Consulting your medical professional is recommended before taking betaine HCL.
