PaleoCleanse detox program, Am I supposed to feel a difference?

Q: I recently completed the PaleoCleanse detox program. This was the first time I’ve ever done any type of cleanse so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was surprised to discover that I didn’t notice any change at all in the way I feel! I cut out all dairy, sugar, eggs, gluten, alcohol and caffeine for the length of the cleanse, I drank tons of water, exercised as usual, ate lots of fruit, veggies and fish and I never cheated. I also took the detox supplements as instructed plus I took the Paleo Greens and Fiber in my smoothies along with the Paleomeal every day. When I finished the cleanse I gradually reintroduced all the foods I had eliminated and I still didn’t feel any different.

When I initially ordered the PaleoCleanse and other products I had read all the testimonials that other people had written. Many people had reported feeling so great after doing the cleanse so I was excited to experience the same thing.  I’m curious why I would have not experienced anything different after doing this cleanse.  Before doing this cleanse I was already very healthy. It wasn’t a far stretch for me to give up all the foods during the cleanse as I already mostly eat that way anyway. I don’t drink coffee or alcohol very often, don’t eat processed foods, I exercise several times a week and I already have a Paleomeal smoothie with Greens for breakfast every morning. Maybe I’m just not that toxic?? I would be interested to hear your opinion as to why this cleanse didn’t work for me. Am I supposed to feel a difference?

A:  Thank you for your follow up regarding your experience with the PaleoCleanse Detox Program!  What a surprise to read you haven’t experienced any difference since starting this cleanse, you are one of the few!  However, from what you have written about your healthy lifestyle, it sounds like you were not very toxic as you began this cleanse!

The fact that you don’t eat processed foods, drink coffee or alcohol puts you heads above most people, even yet, you were already using PaleoMeal with Greens, which together significantly helps elevate your body’s glutathione levels.  If you’ve been using these products for a while prior to doing this cleanse, you glutathione and other supportive detox nutrient levels were probably already good. When you have good glutathione levels in your liver, your body does a better job of detoxing you from the toxins of daily living, thus keeping you from an unhealthy build up toxins that can get trapped and result in other many other health issues.

Most people do not have such a healthy diet with a good level of exercise.  These are the folks who will feel the most difference when doing this detox program, as they also are more likely to drink alcohol and coffee on a regular basis too.

So now, after doing this detox program your liver, and digestive tract are probably even cleaner and operating better than probably 98% of people your age!

Thank you for your feedback and questions, and I hope you will continue on your path of good health into the future!

Pregnant and Depressed

Q: I recently found out that i am pregnant. I was going to order the prenatal essential packets and was also thinking about the super liquid folate and cod liver oil. But I am unsure if i still need those on top of the packets. I was also going to get the HLC probiotic because I have a sensitive stomach. Also I have had problems with depression before and was wondering what you recommend for avoiding that as well.

A: Congratulations on your pregnancy!  I hope you are doing better with everything else we’ve consulted on in the past as well.

Yes, the Prenatal Pro Essential Packets are excellent to take during pregnancy, as well as Cod Liver Oil, and HLC Probiotic.  Looks like you’ve ordered the HLC Intensive Capsules in the past, which would be a good one to take if you haven’t been taking a probiotic for a while.

As for the packets, they do have enough folate to support a healthy pregnancy, however, if you have had problems with depression, then it would be okay to add 1 drop / day of the Super Liquid Folate if you still have some, as sometimes a little more folate can help lessen depression symptoms in some.

Folic acid or folate deficiency has been found among many individuals suffering from depression and has been linked to poor response to antidepressant therapies. Folate supplements have been used for enhancing treatment response to antidepressants. Limited clinical research suggests that folic acid is not effective as a replacement for conventional antidepressant therapy. Blood tests can determine if an individual is low in vitamins such as folic acid, though I know you’ve taking quite a bit of folate in the past with the Super Liquid Folate.  There are people who have an deficiency, if you suspect this could be you ask your doctor to check you for aheterozygous for MTHFR C667T enzyme mutation.

Good foods to focus on in your diet for naturally occuring folate are: leafy vegetables (spinach, broccoli, lettuce), okra, asparagus, fruits (bananas, melons, lemons), legumes, mushrooms, organ meat (beef liver, kidney), fresh squeezed orange juice, and tomato.

Women experience depression about twice as much as men, which leads researchers to believe hormonal factors may play a role in the development of depression.  Hormones do change as you go through pregnancy, so it is good for you to follow up with your doctor and let him/her know about your depression so they are aware.

Help with Nausea and Vitamins during Pregnancy

Q: Are there any vitamins that seem to help out more with naseau during pregnancy?  I had lots of naseau during my last pregnancy.  I am trying to start a regimen now that may help out with that.  During my last pregnancy, I took prescription prenatals.

 I am currently taking:
Garden of Life Prenatals
Designs for Health Vitamin D3 8000 iu ( I have been tested and taking this much is what has brought my levels up to optimal)
Magnesium (dimagnesium malate) 500mg
Krill Oil

A: I see your purchased the DFH Prenatal Essential Packets just before you sent in this email.  Are you taking them as of yet?  If so how is it going?Or are you still finishing up the ones you have?  I really like the DFH Prenatals, as they do provide excellent nutritional support during a pregnancy.  However, if you are feeling nauseous, you may want to try this one next:

  • Ultra Natal Prenatal Vitamin by BioGenesis - this is a good multivitamin with specialty nutrients designed to help reduce feelings of nausea and GI discomfort.  You would also probably want to continue with your Vitamin D Supreme if your vitamin D levels are still low, and your Krill Oil, and Magnesium Malate too.

Since you had lots of nausea during your last pregnancy, perhaps you may benefit during this one to add this too:

  • Pregnan-gen by Genestra - It has anti-toxic liver support to facilitate proper hormone metabolism and toxin elimination to counteract pregnancy induced nausea. Pregnan-gen delivers proper arterial and lymphatic drainage and improves the umbilical circulation and nutrition for healthy fetal development. This remedy can also be used to reduce the discomfort of pelvic stasis and congestion leading to cellulite and extremity swellings during the last trimester.  Take 10 drops once daily, or you may take several times daily if needed.

Are you taking a good probiotic?  I didn’t see that you listed one.  If not, then I’d recommend HLC Intensive Capsules Pharmax - this can be very helpful to take daily to lessen the chance of yeast overgrowth, which commonly occurs during pregnancy.  Having good flora in your gut is also helpful for your baby’s gut flora and immune development development too.

Bear in mind that around 80% of the immune system stems from the gut, this vital area needs to be populated with all the right micro-organisms to help it function optimally. The balance between the beneficial bacteria and the pathogenic or bad bacteria is critical. This also applies to babies, whose immune systems strengthen from the moment they enter into the world. So, if you want to give your little one a head start in life, it may be time to think gut flora.

Hope you have a healthy, nausea free pregnancy!

Can I give the Lipopure Melatonin to my small children?

Q:  I ordered the Biogenesis Lipopure Melatonin for my kids.  Can I use it for kids?  My children are 2 and 3.  If so, is the dosage on bottle of 1 ml accurate for this age or should it be less?

A: Melatonin can be used with children to help regulate sleep cycles and regulating circadian rhythm in the short term.  We don’t know about using it on a long-term basis in children.

This is what some research has found:

Insomnia (children): Melatonin 1-5mg once daily at bedtime for up to two months has been used.

There is other research with children who have sleep disorders, (children with behavioral, developmental, or intellectual disorders): Dosages most often varied from 3 to 6mg and were administered daily prior to bedtime.  Some studies employed lower (0.1-1mg) dose.  Treatment duration ranged from one week to a year, with the majority lasting several weeks.

In general, it is best to start off with a low dose and work up to what works best for that individual.  This product has 1.5 mg of melatonin per dropper.  I would recommend starting off with 1/3 dropper (0.5 mg) with each child, and then increase the dose by 0.5mg each time until you find the dose that works best for each child.

It takes about 20-30 minutes to get absorbed and have an effect.  Try to get the liquid under the tongue.  If you use on both children, and touch the mucosa of the mouth, I would recommend a good hot water rinse of the dropper to wash off germs.

Here is an info sheet on this product too for your reference:

Is turmeric good to use to help reduce inflammation?

Q: I am supporting an anti inflammatory diet and have heard that tumeric is good to use. I also take fish oil. What do you think?

A: Turmeric is very good to use to help reduce inflammation and protect your cells.  C3 Curcumin by DFH is an excellent product to help with these issues.  Here is a list of benefits of curcumin (the active component of turmeric):

IMMUNE SYSTEM REGULATION
• Inflammation—injury, post-operative, joint wear and tear (osteoarthritis)
• Allergic reactions—asthma
• Autoimmune activity reduction—rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis in animals
• NK cell activity increase
• Reduced cancer development and spread in certain animal models of carcinogenesis: breast, prostate, colon, pancreatic, glioma, ovarian

ANTIMICROBIAL
• Antiviral, Epstein Barr, and HIV virus
• Antibacterial, antiparasitic

GI PROTECTION & HEALING
• stomach ulcer, Crohn’s or proctitis

CARDIOVASCULAR PROTECTION
• reduces cholesterol oxidation and levels, increases HDL
• reduces fibrinogen
• reduces platelet aggregation

BRAIN PROTECTION
• reduced brain damage following ischemia (reduced blood flow)
• reduced development and regression of Alzeimer’s disease progression in animal models
• reduced gliomas (brain tumors)
• antidepressant effects

LIVER PROTECTION from alcohol and aflatoxin (peanut fungus)

TOXIC METAL CHELATOR
• Effective chelator of copper and iron

ANTIOXIDANT

BILE SUPPORT
• enhances bile flow and solubility

Taking a good quality fish oil also has a variety of health benefits, including reducing inflammation.  I see you’ve been taking Finest Fish Oil Capsules by Pharmax for a while now, which is an excellent brand!

Can tooth decay be reversed with Vitamin D & A and Activator X?

Q: I am currently researching about how to reverse the tooth cavity. I understand Vitamin D & A and Activator X (in whole food form, not the isolate vitamins) are critical. Cod liver oil, butter oil are rich in Vitamin D & A and Activator X together in a food form. I am wondering if you have any suggestion to reverse the tooth cavity, and have any products that will help?

A: I do not know of any product that has demonstrated the ability to reverse a tooth cavity (if so, we’d probably be rich and would be putting a big dent in the dental business if this were the case), though some research on vitamin K2 is promising.

Certainly, vitamin D, A, & K (Activator X) are important in bone remodeling.  Butter oil from grass fed cows has this “Activator X” (vitamin K2) nutrient, that the dentist Weston A. Price wrote about (http://www.westonaprice.org/fat-soluble-activators/x-factor-is-vitamin-k2).  Cod Liver Oil only has vitamin’s A & D.

This is a link to a new product that Seroyal/Genestra/Pharmax as recently come out with for bone and teeth support, called Cal Mag Berry Liquid, this has vitamins A, D, & K, along with calcium, magnesium & boron.

http://www.rockwellnutrition-canada.com/Cal-Mag-Berry-Liquid-by-Pharmax.html - Canada site

They recently started adding vitamin K2 to it.  The vitamin K2 is derived from naturally fermented soybeans (which are non-GMO).

One of the sweeteners in this liquid is Xylitol.  Xylitol (a low-glycemic sugar alcohol), an inhibitor of the cavity-causing bacteria streptococcus mutans, is a natural sweetener derived from birch tree bark or corn husks. Xylitol halts tooth decay, inhibits the formation of dental plaque and re-mineralizes tooth enamel.

This chewing gum may be helpful to use after meals or snacks: Xylitol Fruit Gum by BioGenesis, has xylitol.

Additionally, Genestra makes a very good, purified Cod Liver Oil, which is high in vitamin A & D.
